Tuesday, 8 December

Students turned in a draft page from the 1st Amendment Guide Book assignment.

Class today included a lesson in analyzing assignment sheets.

Students gave one another feedback on the draft guidebook sections.

Mr. Zartler gave a short lecture on 1st Amendment and the Media and especially limits on broadcast radio and television and on Symbolic Speech and the following concepts:


Speech Concepts:
What types of speech are there?

How does the three-part “test” established in Miller v. California work? What does it do?

What does the 1st Amendment say about “Prior Restraint”? What examples or explanation can you provide?

What is symbolic and / or expressive speech? What examples or explanation can you provide?
What limits are there to these kinds of speech?

Texas v. Johnson (1989) What is important to know about the effects of this case?

There will be a quiz on speech and assembly next class; also a second page of the guide book is due.

Class began with a quiz on the religious protections of the 1st Amendment.

The class reviewed the quiz.

Mr. Zartler asked students to correct the typo in the study question for Wednesday, 2 December. The question should read, "How does the 1st Amendment impact education and schools?"

Students had time to study Freedom of Speech and the Press.

Mr. Zartler gave additional detail regarding the 1st Amendment Guidebook including providing the rubric below.

Students were reminded of reading due on Tuesday, as well as draft parts of the Guidebook project due on Tuesday and Thursday.

Classes began with reviewing what experts say the various amendments mean using the videos from the Annenberg Institute.

Class reviewed the seven study questions from the November 30th and December 2nd study guides.

The class also reviewed the difference between "Civil Liberties" and "Civil Rights" laws.

Students were given a handout on this news story Satanic group reveals crowdfunded monument for Oklahoma State Capitol and after reading and thinking about the story, it was used to discuss the 1st Amendment issues relating to church and state.

If time remains, the class took a quiz and discussed the results based on this information: What Americans get wrong: survey reveals biggest misconceptions

Students were given the following due dates:
